History :
There are many more myths and stories have been associated with Holi festival. According to mythos, the festival is known as Holi, owing to the legend of Holika. Demon King Hiranyakashyap who enforced everybody in his kingdom to worship him instead of God, but his virtuous son, Pralhad refused to do so and remained devotee of Lord Vishnu, the Hindu Lord. Hiranyakashyap desired his son to be killed. As Holika had a godsend which made her immune to fire so Hiranyakashyap asked her to enter a burning fire having Pralhad in her lap. However, the Lord Vishnu came to help Pralhad for his extreme devotedness and was saved by the lord himself while Holika perished and burnt to ashes. Somehow, she was unaware about the fact that her powers worked only if she entered the fire alone.
Celebration :
At night of Holi, people gather at important crossways and burn huge bonfires, celebration named Holika Dahan. To render thankfulness to the God of Fire, Agni, gram and stalks from the harvest is also offered to Agni with all humbleness. As most of the People believe that the ash left from this bonfire protects them from evil forces, they apply it on their foreheads.
Great enthusiasm can be seen in people on the next day when people mix bright colours into the water which turns in sprinkling colored water on each other. Everyone is overwhelming with joy and people get lot of time to be crazy as most of the shops and offices remain closed on that day. Children sprays colours with their pichkaris (Fountain gun) and throws water ballons at passers-by. People forget the differences between them by exchanging sweets and festive greetings and rejoice the day by dancing on the rhythm of the dholak.
Protective umbrella to avoid Evils of Holi:
These days natural colours are substituted by harmful chemical colours.Natural firewood is being burnt. Large amount of water is being wasted. It is necessary to celebrate Holi in an ethical and mannerly way. We should use natural colours, burn down the waste material which automatically reduce the impact on the nature.
